| Dennis and Al and I went out on Dennis' boat. We were
just out in search of ling cod and other bottom dwellers. It was a beautiful, calm
day on the ocean, and we did really well as far as fishing goes. I was not only able
to release my own catches, but I even steered the boat to get Al's lure off the bottom
where it was stuck. You see, the danger of rock fishing, is that sometimes you
"catch" a rock. Your lure or sinker gets caught in a crevace, and there's
no un hooking it. Sometimes just loosening the line helps, but not always. So
I steered the boat in a tight circle to see if maybe the tangle would release. I was
simply following Al's instructions, but hey, that's something. I wasn't catching much with the lures, and Dennis was pulling
up all sorts of fish. So I asked him how to rig my rod to switch to bait, and when I
did, I started to hook fish too. Al was trying different things too. he would
put a little squid on the hook with the sardine, just to make it extra-irrisitable to your
basic rock fish.
We came up with reds and salmon groupers. Dennis noticed
that one of the salmon groupers was slightly different, so we looked it up on the chart,
and decided that it was a "Copper Rock Fish" rather than a salmon grouper.
The guys got really big ling cod. At one point we were
sure that Al was stuck on the bottom, but it turned out that he had a big feisty ling.
It probably ducked in between some rocks for a while, which is why if felt like the
lure/sinker was hooked on a rock. Then Dennis pulled up one even bigger
fish. He
always does that somehow -- gets the biggest fish of the day...It doesn't bother me,
because I'm not in his league, and I know it makes him very happy to be the best fisherman
around. It doesn't seem to bother Al at all either. Everyone's happy.
