October 20, 2002 We had another charter last weekend, and it was the best so far. The weather was perfect, and the fish were jumping. I didnt realize that fish really jump, just like in the song "Summertime". Anyhow, the Albacore werent jumping, but we saw small bait fish swimming in a fast school, leaping out of the water like tiny dolphins. On the first trip we were all so proud to be catching 12 pound fish. This time they were 20 pound fish, and thats a huge difference in a fish that fights as much as an albacore. Id be reeling a fish in and pulling up on the rod, and theyre just heavy. My arms were getting tired. Sometimes, Id just hang onto the rod with both hands and lean back against the weight of the fish, just to rest a little. I heard that on some boats, the deck hands dont let you rest they make you keep fighting. There were sharks hanging around the boat. My friend
Priti, who is much tinier than I am, hooked into a 7 foot shark! She was yelping for help,
and I didnt know why till I ended up with one on my line too! Theyre huge! And
hungry! It was wild to see the fins circling all around sticking up like in a cartoon. The
deck hands just cut the line to get rid of the shark, but its scary while its
hanging on there, and you cant let go of your rod, and theres this huge
man-eater dragging your around the boat. In the pictures you can see a few of the
albacore that were mauled by sharks while they were being dragged to the boat by one of
the anglers. These fish had no chance... |

People always ask if I got sick, and yep, I did, but it doesnt matter in the big scheme of things. Ive gotten sick in the morning on every overnight trip so far. But shortly after "chumming" I feel better, and eat one of the nasty breakfast burritos, and Im fine the rest of the day. I even eat the robust chili con carne with raw onions on the way back to land! I use the sea sickness prevention "patch", and it makes me a little dizzy and tired, so Im going to try "meclizine" next, which is generic Bonine. This weekend is supposed to be windy and choppy, and Im going to take meclizine and go out with a friend and see how I do. We won't mind turning back since fishing is tough when its "sloppy" out there anyhow. It will be sort of like astronaut training.Oh, and there was "the one that got away" too. I had a huge fish on the line (well who knows, I never did see it) and I had been fighting it for at least 15 minutes. It kept pulling me around the bow of the boat and back around the bow the other way. Then Rich, the newest angler in the group, suddenly came from no where with a fish on his line too, and his line crossed mine, and my line broke instantly. HE got to reel in his fish. I was so mad, I was swearing like a sailor. But all was forgiven a few minutes later when I tied a new hook on, baited it, and tossed it out, and got slammed with another albacore before I was rested enough to be excited about it. Everyone from the charter wants to go out again.
The albacore are seasonal, so there's no saying how much longer they'll be around.
They may be gone after the hurricane down off Mexico stirs up the currents, or they may be
here for another month or two, in which case we can go out again soon. |
